Gun Control.
The conversation I woke up to this morning: "Why don't we just have laws against murder, robbery, rape, etc.? Oh wait, we do & that doesn't stop them either"
someone said "ameeennnn" I said "So do you suggest we take them away? Does that solve it?"
This person said "They ain't taking my guns away."
They ARE NOT taking your guns away. Yet. Biden/Obama made a proposal that bans magazines with over 10 bullets and bans assault rifles, ect. Of course that still has to go through Congress. I HOPE it does!!
Assault weapons should be reserved for military, only. Just like no one should own grenades or rocket launchers no one should own a weapon that can shoot 60 bullets in less than a minute. NO ONE. The safety of our people should come before stubborn WANTS.
Just because the guns didn't physically shoot themselves does NOT mean they should be accessible for civilians! Please stop talking about spoons and knives- We all know anything can hurt someone that doesn't mean we lie down and do nothing about all the mass shootings that happened last year. Stop being ignorant and start caring about HUMAN life over your possessions. People protected themselves adequately before assault weapons and they aren't petitioning to take away hand guns or shot guns.
As for focusing more on mental illness; that is a part of their proposal! BUT 1 in 5 Americans suffer from some variety of mental ailment, I am bipolar. K is not! So if K got a gun would it not stand to reason that I also, the one with a "mental ailment", also has a gun. So do you take his right away or say that I am not that wrong kind of crazy? There will be cracks- that doesn't mean that we shouldn't try just there will be a lot of problems with it at first.

I have the utmost respect for you for even venturing out and posting about this issue because it is probably the most controversial one out there right now. However, I don't agree with you and I will tell you why - not to try to debate with you, not to try to prove you wrong, but simply to point out a few things that a lot of people are seeming to overlook.
ReplyDeleteOur beautiful country was founded on the constitution. A constitution written with presidents trying to overstep boundaries and essentially morph our freedom into a dictatorship at any chance they get in mind. A constitution that was always supposed to be certain that the people's voices were heard and that the rights and freedoms that so many brave men and women (our father's fathers and their fathers) willingly gave their lives for - they sacrificed it all so as to ensure that we, the citizens of the United States of America, would always have our freedoms protected.
Obamacare. It's essentially unconstitutional, yet it was still passed. A law that forces people to have healthcare. It seems great and I am overjoyed that people who normally cannot afford basic healthcare now have access to it, but take a closer look. A law that FORCES you to do something "or else." There is no freedom in that.
Same goes for gun control. While I don't believe people really need assault weapons for recreational use, my family owns more than one. Are we bad people? On the contrary, we are probably some of the nicest you will ever meet. Are we going to go cause a mass murder simply because we own assault weapons? That's a very harsh statement to make. Are we holding onto them because we are just stubborn? No. We are holding onto them because it is our right - a right that our family members have died to protect, a right that my husband is still fighting to protect. Perhaps you haven't seen but last week it was released that the Sandy Hook shooter didn't even use an assault rifle. Obama took advantage of the high emotions to get his anti-gun legislation rolling and he will admit to it. Weapons don't kill people, like you mentioned. Even more interestingly, murder, rape and robbery are illegal, but it's still happening isn't it? How will taking away weapons protect any of us any better? I believe there should be stricter laws on the process a citizen must go through to purchase "assault" weapons; however, I
don't think molesting our freedoms is the answer.
Just my honest opinion, no personal attack meant here.
P.S. - I apologize for the numerous different posts...I shared too much personal information in the first and had to edit it and now your comments are polluted by yours truly :)
All opinion are welcome. I'm sorry if you took my words as possibly saying people with them are automatically bad, that's not how I feel. I am from TX someone I love surely owns one. As for the constituion and Obamacare, I don't think the founding father had the foresight to dream of the world we live in today. Sandy Hook was only 1 of 7 mass shootings last year. Although no assault weapon was used it was in his possession. He did however have magazines that contained more than 10 bullets which would be illegal through this plan. I hear you on the fact that rape, robbery, and murder are illegal yet still happen, but that doesn't mean we do nothing. We don't not try.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Obamacare. I think it is doing what is Best for the people, which I believe is the governments job. When I first started working and they took out money for social security I was mad because I didn't ask them to. I felt it was very forced upon me. I'm not so naive anymore and I know it is for my benefit. Same with car insurance, we have to it and although it is not for just yout benefit do cars matter more than your health?
I do not believe the bill will pass. I do hope for some change. I understand your viewpoint I just don't share it. As far as this blog goes I will discuss anything I feel strongly about. I may never be a "great" blogger or have tons of followers because of it but this is my little corner and everything is open for dicussion. There are probably a billion mistakes in here I am writing this on my phone. Thank you for your comment Rachel I very much appreciate your blog! :) You are the reason I started my own.
Sorry one more thing, I didn't adequately explain my views on the constitution. You had said it was for the people to have rights and a voice. I don't believe it gives people the right to voice their concerns ot be heard I doubt any laws would ever get passed. Futhermore that's why we elect representatives. When those reps do not vote on new laws the way people wish they would the disconnect begins. If we were to have a true vote then we would vote on everything and popular vote would reign supreme, that's not the case. If it was I doubt (I hate bringing up this reference) african americans would have been freed, or women's suffrage. Progress would be halted. I demand progress I will be happy when gays can marry!
ReplyDeleteI am getting so off topic. Anyways, I am young and possibly still naive. I have only voted once and I have a lot more to learn I could be wrong. I am pretty headstrong/stubborn. I tend to have a more liberal/socialistic view. I do not think our president is a communist, I think he's trying to help.
Jessica, my heart literally sank into my stomach when I read the comment you left on my blog post. On the contrary to what you may think, I was not trying to passive aggressively attack you at all. There has been a sequence of events leading to the final push leading me to finally sit down and write my post; if anything, your post really helped me look at the issue from a different perspective. I was not at all trying to target or belittle your beliefs and opinions.
DeleteI think we can agree to disagree, embracing all views on the issues, and sleep peacefully at night knowing that (for the most part) what we have to say doesn't make a hill of beans difference in the end anyhow :) This is your own personal little corner of the blogosphere and I didn't at all mean to take that from you - I will continue to return to your blog because your straight forward passionate attitude is extremely refreshing.
I hope you know that I intended no offense in any of the comments I made as well as my post and look forward to hearing more from you, Jessica!
Rachel you are seriously the nicest person I have ever... met-ish? I feel like I know you. I am so naturally suspcious you'll have to excuse me assuming it was about me. Thank you for your reply :)
